Once again I am asking you to examine your reasons for undertaking the study of the martial arts. For those you who are teaching the art or are aspiring to someday teach, I want you to examine that which lies at the core of transmitting technique and information to others. Ask which methods are available to you as an instructor and what you hope to transmit.
By instructing others you may be able to solidify your understanding of a concept or technique and allow it to bring you to the next level. The conformity and subjugation of the student to the instructor should only be a stage that enables them to grasp techniques for themselves, developing the freedom to posses the art as their own. So, although you first ask how you may meet my expectation as your teacher, please think ahead and figure out how to make what I transmit meet you own needs and expectations. Do not regard what I give you be just so much information or material; a martial arts menagerie accumulating dust, protected by its curio in some corner of your brain. Live it, breathe it, and make it uniquely yours. We will be completing the unit on the Gim in four more weeks. The last class will be devoted to having each student execute the form for the class, along with your self-created empty hand form. I will also ask you to write a couple of paragraphs or what ever it takes less or more on the following topics. Jim - How is power generated in the White Crane system? Jane - What is your latest take on what is bad art? Beth - What do I see as similarities between Tai Chi and White Crane? Holly - How do figure skating and White Crane Techniques complement each other? Don - What are the differences between Tai Chi practice and White Crane Practice? Brendan - What exercises can I do using my body and mind to focus my natural energy? Glenn - Describe the core energies of the White Crane techniques and how you can integrate them into your martial arts experience as a whole. Elizabeth - What makes a performer interesting to watch? Lynn - Compare the use of the fencing foil to the use of the gim. Terry - How can I use what we leaned to strengthen and stretch the back and what should be avoided? Tiffany - How can you generate power when you are smaller than your opponent?
