THE MIND KILLER

In teaching of late I have chosen a particular style that is designed to promote an absence of fear in the kwoon.  I am prevailing upon you to trust me to teach you areas of the art about which you harbor serious apprehension.  As a Simu (school mother) I think it is an appropriate way to go about expanding your experience in the art.   The problem is, I can only promote this atmosphere around you.  It is up to you to immediately eradicate fear within yourself.

Now what are some of the most common fears in the kwoon:  Getting physically clobbered, looking foolish, not having any drive and motivation, … go on and name your own.   In order to put fear aside you must also put aside security, although in the process you will be gaining true security.

My positive comments and criticisms should affect you only to the degree that it helps you in your process and practice and not work as a mind hit, only to make you conformist, dull, and self conscious.  Fear is the mind killer, the killer of intelligence which keeps you from gaining knowledge and acceptance of the Real and the True.

In your teaching you must cultivate your yin side; your bigger non-judgmental side.  You must love those whom you teach and you must harbor no pettiness while teaching.  The yang component is that you are transmitting and in charge.  The yin aspect is that you are nurturing and embracing.

Learn the tools but do not imitate.  Instead, discover for yourself.   That is what learning the art and all learning, in general, is about - Self-discovery.   The primary function of the martial arts is to afford each one of us the opportunity to live as freely as possible, without fear.
