Children's Programs

Traditionally, in Asia, it has been recognized that there are few endeavors which can enrich a child's growth and maturation such as a quality martial arts education can. Unfortunately, in the West, martial arts training is too often marketed to an uneducated population as just another product, or worse yet, as a competitive sport such as football or baseball. While competitive sports may or many not promote positive values, one only has to look at the state of modern athletics; all the way from Pop Warner football and Little League baseball, to professional sports
to see that the obsession to win at all costs has become paramount. Modern athletic sports have become multi-billion dollar businesses, and everyone wants to cash in. This is also happening in the martial arts world - traditional values which have always been emphasized when training children (and adults) are being left behind in favor of the Black Belt Club, pizza parties, and the glorification of rank achievement and tournament participation. In fact, for many these are the only reasons they study, as it gives a quick (but shallow) ego boost. Even the so-called "Shaolin Temple" is cashing in, with contemporary wushu trained "monk" impersonators proliferating everywhere.

At White Lotus, our Children's Kung Fu Program emphasizes teaching martial arts to children as a vehicle for greater mental and physical health; confidence and self-esteem; greater focus and concentration; respect for the self and others; improved social skills; aesthetic and artistic appreciation; and self-defense. This is accomplished through the structured curriculum and teaching methodology, the serious yet family-like atmosphere of the school and classes, and the experience and professional training of our Instructors. In addition to the challenging yet enjoyable classes and training which the children receive, they all have the opportunity to perform and demonstrate in public during the numerous demonstrations and shows which we participate in, such as at First Night Hartford, Borders Books and Music, Open Houses, and for various other groups and organizations. This helps to make their martial arts education even more enjoyable and beneficial.

As the children enter their early teens, they are integrated into our adult classes (as they are ready) so that they can study in more depth, thus ensuring that they will not become bored with their training. Children who are very motivated also have the opportunity to assist in teaching the classes, under adult supervision, thereby gaining experience in supervising others.

Truly, a quality martial arts education can be of immense value to children in today's society with its many distractions. We encourage all interested parents to call us at 860-232-0109 and arrange for a free lesson.
